STROUD LIBRARY BEGINS WELCOME FOR ROUTE CENTENNIAL YEAR

"COOL CAT" COMES TO THE LIBRARY FOR 2026! GRANTS TO BRING BIG CHANGES 2026

The Route 66 Centennial opened the door for winning two grants for the Stroud Public Library.  One comes for historic preservation and neon sign and one for programming. Stroud is the first Oklahoma library to receive a Route 66 grant.

One will address some structural issues and provide for an elegant art deco style neon sign, and the other grant will provide funding for a special centennial program for traveling families, "ROUTE 66 FAMILY ADVENTURE HUB." This will include some funding for temp staff and added open hours. As a result, exciting programs have been planned for the year.

In addition, the library is partnering with the Route 66 Spirit of America Museum (Stroud) to host some special programs for youth related to the museum's values. These include innovation, hope, dreams and imagination, and peace.

Watch for announcements for these exciting programs for children, youth, and families.

State Group Hosts Winter Stories, in Ada Jan 23-24

Many remember a few years ago the state wide storytelling organization, The Oklahoma Territory Tellers, held their annual summer festival, "The Spirit of Oklahoma Storytelling Festival" in Stroud.

Here is a great chance to hear great stories, attend workshops, and meet people who love stories!  The oral art of storytelling retreat is being held in partnership with the Chickasaw Nation this year!

Dates are Jan 23-24, 2026 in Ada, Oklahoma at the Chickasaw Nation Arts and Humanities Building.

Storyteller and local author, Marilyn A. Hudson, will be partnering with the Stroud Public Library as they celebrate the 100 years of the famous Route 66 highway.

The Stroud Public Library was recently awarded two grants due to the national focus on the celebration.

One grant will add a new neon sign to raise public awareness of the historic art deco building now housing the library. It was a 1930's telephone exchange building and is unique in the art deco architecture and the fact it houses the only elevator in Stroud!

The other grant makes the library the only library in Oklahoma along Route 66 to receive a programming grant. "The Route 66 Adventure Hub Program" will allow families traveling the famous road to stop and take part in fun activities and programs designed for them.

Hudson will be assisting in providing fun oral storytelling and book-based programs suitable for families.  Hudson is a retired educator and library professional with two decades of experience working with youth and children and in sharing stories professionally.

Her published works cover several genres - from nonfiction to children's stories.

The grant will also provide for 2026, some additional staff and added hours to raise the levels of access and activity for the centennial.

"There is no better time," said Hudson, " to explore and discover the local library! I am looking forward to this year and sharing some marvelous stories!"
